Founded in 1559 by Jean Calvin, the University of Geneva (UNIGE) is a centre for education, reflection, dialogue and research. With 13'379 students of over 140 different nationalities, it is the second largest university in Switzerland. UNIGE’s buildings are located throughout the city, thereby fostering connections between residents and students, with some sites also located in the countryside or on the shores of Lake Leman.
UNIGE comprises 7 colleges (Science, Medicine, Humanities, Economic and Social Sciences, Law, Psychology and the Educational Sciences, Theology), the School of Translation and Interpretation, and various interdisciplinary centres (active in information technology, neuroscience and the environment). The University offers over 340 different degrees and more than 200 continuing education programmes which cover a wide range of disciplines in the exact sciences, medicine and the social sciences.
UNIGE establishes its priorities within six major fields: the life sciences (from genus to patient), physics (from atom to galaxies) neuroscience (from neurons to philosophy), history, the environmental sciences, and finance and society.
UNIGE is a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and is ranked among the 20 top research universities in Europe.

With a view to offering opportunities for lifelong learning, the University of Geneva creates programmes of study adapted to the needs of professionals: Master of Advanced Studies, Diploma in Advanced Studies, or Certificate of Advanced Studies.
UNIGE’s course programmes incorporate the latest advances in academic research, respond to precise and rigorous requirements and allow participants to update and fine-tune their knowledge, acquire new skills or distinguish themselves in new careers.
With a view to sharing intellectual or spiritual developments either generated by recent research or anchored in its history, UNIGE offers short programmes targeting the general public and involving a single session, a day, or a course of lectures.
In addition, the Summer School and Winter School programmes are designed to accommodate the specific needs of international clients. The à la carte programmes are tailor-made. These programmes use innovative teaching techniques and strategies to facilitate learning, and they also incorporate distance learning and multimedia programmes.

Our
strategy ensures that our programmes fulfil the following criteria:

In 2008, the University of Geneva enrolled more
than 10,000 students in continuing education, offered more than 230 programmes
and planned and executed more than 41'000 hours of teaching for participating
professionals.
